چکیده

-Comparison is made between 30 mbar ozone fields that are generated by a transport-chemistry model utilizing the winds from the Goddard Space Flight Center stratospheric data assimilation system (STRATAN), observations from the LIMS instrument on Nimbus 7, and the ozone fields that result from ‘flying’ a mathematical simulation of LIMS observations through the transport-chemistry model ozone fields. The modeled ozone fields are found to resemble the LlMS observations, but the model fields show much more temporal and spatial structure than do the LIMS observations. The ‘satellite-mapped’ model results resemble the LIMS observations much more closely. These results are very consistent with the earlier discussions of satellite space--time sampling by Salby.

Seasonal persistence of northern low- and middle-latitude anomalies of ozone and other trace gases in the upper stratosphere

[1] Analysis of observed ozone profiles in Northern Hemisphere low and middle latitudes reveals the seasonal persistence of ozone anomalies in both the lower and upper stratosphere. Principal component analysis is used to detect that above 16 hPa the persistence is strongest in the latitude band 15–45 N, while below 16 hPa the strongest persistence is found over 45–60 N. In both cases, ozone an...

A climatology of the diurnal variations in stratospheric and mesospheric ozone over Bern, Switzerland

The ground-based radiometer GROMOS, stationed in Bern (47.95 N, 7.44 E), Switzerland, has a unique data set: it obtains ozone profiles from November 1994 to present with a time resolution of 30 min and equivalent quality during nightand daytime. Here, we derive a monthly climatology of the daily ozone cycle from 17 years of GROMOS observation. We present the diurnal ozone variation of the strat...

Uncertainties in the evolution of stratospheric ozone and implications for recent temperature changes in the tropical lower stratosphere

[1] Observations from satellites and balloons suggest that ozone abundances have decreased in the tropical lower stratosphere since the late 1970s, but this long-term change is occurring in a region of large interannual variability. Three different ozone databases provide regression fits to the ozone observations, and are available for use in model studies of the influence of ozone changes on s...

Seasonal persistence of ozone and zonal wind anomalies in the equatorial stratosphere

[1] Analysis of the variability of equatorial ozone profiles in the Satellite Aerosol and Gas Experiment‐corrected Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet data set demonstrates a strong seasonal persistence of interannual ozone anomalies, revealing a seasonal dependence to equatorial ozone variability. In the lower stratosphere (40–25 hPa) and in the upper stratosphere (6–4 hPa), ozone anomalies persist ...

The mean meridional circulation and midlatitude ozone buildup

The wintertime ozone buildup over the Northern Hemisphere (NH) midlatitudes and its connection with the mean meridional circulation in the stratosphere are examined statistically on a monthly basis from October to March (1980–2002). The ozone buildup begins locally in October with positive total ozone tendencies over the North Pacific, which spread eastward and westward in November and finally ...
